Statue of Lord Byron
Greece, Athens

The Statue of Lord Byron (Άγαλμα Λόρδου Βύρωνος) stands near the Temple of Olympian Zeus, close to the entrance of Athens' National Garden. The monument honors the English poet, Romantic figure, and one of the most prominent philhellenes — George Gordon Byron — who is remembered in Greece as a symbolic supporter of the Greek War of Independence.

Byron offered unwavering support for the Greek cause in the early 19th century — morally, politically, and financially. In 1823, he arrived in Greece and settled in Mesolongi, where he assisted with the resistance effort. Unfortunately, he died of illness in 1824 at the age of 36. His death resonated deeply throughout Europe and significantly strengthened international support for the Greek struggle.

Erected in the 20th century, the statue represents the Greek people's gratitude for Byron’s solidarity. Surrounded by greenery and close to archaeological landmarks, it is an integral part of Athens’ cultural landscape. The site draws both literature and history enthusiasts, as well as those interested in the international dimension of Greece’s path to independence.

The Statue of Lord Byron stands as a reminder of the union between art, the ideals of freedom, and the spirit of international humanism that helped shape modern Greece.
