Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour - Hagios Sostis
Greece, Athens

The Holy Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour – Hagios Sostis (Άγιος Σώστης) is one of the most distinctive and symbolically rich Orthodox churches in Athens. It is located along Syngrou Avenue, between the districts of Neos Kosmos and Koukaki, and stands out for both its architecture and its deep connection to modern Greek history.

The church was built in the late 19th century, following Greece's liberation from Ottoman rule, as an offering of gratitude for the miraculous survival of King George I, who escaped an assassination attempt in 1898. The name "Sostis" derives from the Greek word “σωσθείς,” meaning “the one who was saved,” commemorating this event and imbuing the church with national and spiritual significance.

Architecturally, the church follows the neo-Byzantine style, with symmetrical lines and classical balance. It features a central dome supported by four smaller corner towers, creating a harmonious and stately silhouette. The main façade is marked by tall arches and delicate stucco details. Inside, the church is richly decorated with wall frescoes and a beautifully carved iconostasis, reflecting the aesthetic and liturgical traditions of Greek Orthodoxy.

Hagios Sostis remains an active parish church today. It hosts regular liturgies, weddings, baptisms, and other religious ceremonies. Its central location and symbolic origins make it a beloved spiritual refuge for locals, as well as a cultural and historical landmark for visitors.

The area around the church includes a small square and park, offering a peaceful setting for reflection and rest. For many Athenians and guests of the city, the Church of Hagios Sostis is not only a place of worship, but also a living reminder of faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of modern Greece.
