Schloss Bellevue, located in Berlin’s Tiergarten Park along the banks of the River Spree, is the official residence of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Built in 1786 in the neoclassical style as a summer residence for Prince Ferdinand of Prussia, it is one of Berlin’s most significant architectural landmarks and the city’s first palace constructed in this style.
Designed by architect Michael Philipp Boumann, the building features a prominent central pavilion, a symmetrical façade, and classical columns that reflect the elegance and rigor of neoclassicism. The name “Bellevue” (“beautiful view”) refers to the scenic outlook over the Spree River and the surrounding landscape, which was rural at the time of construction.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the palace served various roles, including as a museum, headquarters, and government office. During the Nazi period, it was used for official purposes, and after World War II, it underwent reconstruction. Since 1994, it has again served as the official residence of the president of a reunified Germany.
Today, Schloss Bellevue hosts state ceremonies, official receptions, and national events that reflect the constitutional role of the presidency. While most of the palace is not open to the public, the surrounding park remains accessible, and the building stands as a prominent symbol of Germany’s political and architectural heritage.
