Mayachnaya Bay
Russia, Shikotan

Mayachnaya Bay, also known as Soldatskaya Bay, is located on the eastern coast of Shikotan Island, near Cape Krab. Its rocky shores are carved by small streams, and scattered stone islets at the bay’s entrance create a natural barrier against ocean waves. This secluded spot, untouched by civilization, attracts travelers eager to experience the raw beauty of the Kuril Islands.

Not far from the bay stands Cape Krab, home to the Shpanberg Lighthouse—the last Japanese lighthouse built before the Kuril Islands were transferred to the Soviet Union. Constructed during World War II, it remains a crucial navigational point and a silent witness to the region’s complex history.

The landscapes around the bay are strikingly dramatic: steep, towering cliffs covered in dense bamboo vegetation sharply contrast with the vast, azure expanse of the Pacific Ocean. On clear days, breathtaking panoramic views extend toward the horizon, where distant islands emerge from the mist. Seabird colonies thrive along the coast, and seals or even passing whales can occasionally be spotted in the waters.

Reaching the bay requires a trek through forested trails and wildflower-covered meadows, making the journey as rewarding as the destination itself. This remote location is perfect for nature lovers seeking solitude, fresh ocean air, and the serene atmosphere of a place untouched by time.
