Pendjari National Park is located in northwestern Benin and is part of the transnational W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex, which spans across Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Covering an area of approximately 2,755 km², the park serves as a sanctuary for a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species.
Pendjari is renowned for its population of large mammals, such as African elephants, lions, hippos, African buffaloes, and various species of antelopes. It is also home to a wide variety of bird species, making it an attractive destination for birdwatchers. The park’s landscape is diverse, featuring rolling hills and rocky formations of the Atakora mountain range, as well as savannas and gallery forests along the Pendjari River.
In 2017, Pendjari National Park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the W-Arly-Pendjari complex, highlighting its global significance in preserving West Africa’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
