Art Center Marc Chagall
Belarus, Vitebsk

The art center of Marc Chagall is one of the parts of the Marc Chagall Museum in Vitebsk dedicated to the artist. The museum is located in the old part of the city and is housed in a two-story brick building, built at the end of the XIX century. At the beginning of the 20th century, this house belonged to the wife of Colonel Maria Vasilievna Nefedieva. Of interest is the fact that the museum building was depicted by Marc Chagall in the painting "Above the City" next to the Governor's Palace. The art center is focused on the description of the work of the great master. The museum was created in 1992, and at the moment it is the youngest museum of Chagall in the world. It is unique in that it is the only museum of the republic in which the master’s works are stored. Now the collection of the museum has about 300 graphic works by Chagall in the genre of lithography and etching. The first works were donated to the museum by the Nienburg society "The circle of assistance to the Chagall house-museum in Vitebsk." The daughter of the master Ida didn’t stand aside, giving the art center three colored aquatint. The granddaughters of Chagall also contributed, sending a series of biblical illustrations by Chagall, 96 interesting etchings in the form of illustrations for Gogol's work “Dead Souls”. An invaluable service to the museum was provided by Dr. Heinrich Mandel from the German city of Irrell. He presented a huge number of graphic works by Chagall and about two thousand books devoted to the work of the master. This gift allowed in 2002 to open a scientific library based on an art center. At the moment, it stores more than 3,000 publications, among which there are rather rare publications about Chagall, published in the magazines Der Sturm, Kunst und Kunsler and others, published in the first half of the 20th century. Also in the museum's collection are about 130 samples of circulation graphics, among which the works of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso stand out especially. Until now, the museum’s funds contain letters from citizens who spoke out against the creation of the Chagall Museum in Vitebsk. The artist did not fit into the framework of the Soviet ideology and culture of Vitebsk. The city authorities of the late 80s stated bluntly: "Why do we need the Chagall Museum? He is a French artist." The philanthropist Heinrich Mandel said best of all about the artist’s role in the life of the city of Vitebsk: “He who loves Chagall will sooner or later fall in love with Vitebsk - the city that presented Chagall to the world, the city that is present in almost all of the artist’s works, the secret city he kept with childhood to death, which became for him a reflection of Heavenly Jerusalem. " On June 7 each year, the Marc Chagall Art Center celebrates the artist’s birthday. Artists perform at the Chagall House-Museum on Pokrovskaya Street, as well as on Tolstoy and Suvorov streets adjacent to the Chagall art center. Pass the International Shagalov readings. The museum exhibits paintings by Chagall brought from afar. The museum’s collection also contains about 130 circulation drawings of such artists of the European avant-garde as Juan Miro, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Anthony Tapies, Georges Braque, Fernand Leger, Henri Matisse and others. Since 1997, the museum has established close contacts with the heirs of Marc Chagall - the granddaughters of Meret Meyer-Graber (Bern, Switzerland) and Bella Meyer (New York, USA), who also donated a collection of graphic works of their great grandfather to the museum and started organizing Vitebsk and Minsk shows Chagall from a family meeting. In the period from 1997 to 2005, five such exhibitions were arranged:
"Works of the Mediterranean period"
"Marc Chagall. Dedication to Paris"
"Marc Chagall. Landscapes"
"Marc Chagall and the scene"
"Marc Chagall. Color in Black and White"
