The opening of the museum took place in 1969 and was dedicated to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders. This Vitebsk attraction has become an important cultural object of the city - now everyone can get acquainted with the life and work of Mina Filippovich Shmyrev - the legendary Old Man Mina - the commander of the first partisan detachment in the Vitebsk region, Hero of the Soviet Union and Honorary Citizen of Vitebsk. The museum exposition consists of 4 exhibition halls, with a total area of 216 m2. The museum fund has more than 7 thousand exhibits; more than 1.5 thousand are presented in the exposition. The museum exposition tells about the life and work of the legendary brigade commander of the partisan movement during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, M.F.Shmyrev (Old Man Minaya). Documents, photographs, and exhibits tell about the creation of the first partisan detachment “Old Man Minaya” in the Vitebsk region, the organization of the 1st Belorussian, 1st Vitebsk and partisan brigades that fought in the Vitebsk-Surazh partisan zone. The exposition belt presents maps of the defeat of enemy garrisons, an electrified map of the connections of the First Belorussian partisan brigade with the main battle areas of the people's avengers, the layout of partisan airfields, leaflets, partisan banners, a set of medical instruments for the partisan hospital. Also documents and materials about the 825th battalion of the Volga-Tatar Legion, the 105th Guards Aviation Regiment. A large exhibition complex presents weapons. The busts of M.F.Shmyrev, Hero of the Soviet Union M.F.Silnitsky, detachment commander G.S. Kurmelev, personal items, documents, awards, photographs of M.F.Shmyrev and partisans are exhibited. The exploits of the legendary partisan brigade are widely reflected in works of literature and art. V. Sablin’s book “Old Man Minai”, “The Ballad of the Four Hostages” by A. Kuleshov, a portrait of “M.F. Shmyrev - the legendary brigade commander” performed by the artist P. Yavich and the work of “Old Man Mina” by P. Savitsky are exhibited in the museum halls. The documentary film "Old Man Minai" and the feature film "Old Man" are shown. Near the museum building there is a memorial park, which is a kind of continuation of the exposition, a sculptural bust of Minay Shmyrev by the national artist of the USSR Z. Azgur, an oak alley planted by former partisans, the Rail War model, artillery guns and mortar.
