Samur forest
Russia, Htun-Kazmalyar selo

The Samur Forest, located in the extreme south of Dagestan in the Samur River basin, is a subtropical liana forest unique to Russia, striking in its diversity of flora and fauna. These places are distinguished by a humid and relatively mild climate, due to the proximity of the Caspian Sea and mountainous terrain. Thanks to this combination of natural conditions, relict tree and shrub species have been preserved here, and the abundance of vines gives the forest a special exoticism.

The Samur forest is often called the “green lungs” of southern Dagestan. Its territory is home to rare and protected species of plants and animals: here you can find Persian leopards (although extremely rare), red deer, chamois, as well as many birds, including migratory ones, which choose these places for rest and nesting. The reservoirs of the Samur River and its tributaries support the forest ecosystem, supplying the soil with moisture and providing a favorable environment for the development of various forms of life.

Traditionally, the Samur forest from time immemorial has played an important role for local residents, providing them with wood and pastures and additional resources. Today, increasing anthropogenic pressure and changing water levels in the Samur River are putting this fragile ecosystem at risk. To preserve the unique nature of the region, a number of specially protected natural areas were created and measures were taken to regulate forest use. However, conservation tasks remain relevant: it is necessary to preserve the habitats of rare and endangered species, control the cutting down of trees and monitor the state of water resources.

Today, the Samur Forest continues to be a source of scientific research, a place of environmental education and attracts for lovers of wildlife and eco-tourism. Walking along shady paths among massive trunks and tangles of vines allows you to experience all the beauty and pristine subtropical forests of Dagestan. Combining natural wealth and cultural and historical significance, the Samur Forest remains one of the symbols of the living and diverse nature of the region.
