Donkey reserve
Aruba, Santa Cruz

As you approach the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary, you will hear a distinctive cry of a donkey in a greeting salute. Warm faces reach for you to check in new arrivals and offer additional greetings. A herd of donkeys, dressed in their variegated coats from gray to deep brown, with chic ears, often captivate the audience with their inquisitive character.
After the donkeys ceased to be the main mode of transport for the inhabitants of the island in the modern era, they remained “drifting” along the roads where they once traveled, transported passengers and pulled carts. Earlier, even before the creation of the reserve, a large number of donkeys wandered homelessly in search of food and water, and sometimes were prone to abuse ...
The idea of creating a place where these animals could live their lives in a protected environment, came true in 1997. About 40 individuals now live in the Santa Lucia nature reserve, another 15 donkeys are housed in Bringamosa.
Santa Lucia Nature Reserve welcomes guests by offering information, excursions as well as convenient venues for snacks, a buffet. On the territory of the reserve you can purchase original gifts and souvenirs. (All profits go to support the reserve).
