Sietinesis Rock is one of the highest white sandstone outcrops in Latvia, its height is 15 meters and its length is about 0.5 kilometers. It is located on the right bank of the Gauja River between Valmiera and Janmuiža, about 2 kilometers downstream from the Liepas rock.
The rock is dotted with numerous insect passages, which makes it look like a sieve, hence its name (sietins is the Latvian word meaning “sieve”)
From the southern part of Sietines there is a view of the Gauja valley, and picturesque pine forests grow around the rock. You will find small caves and grottoes, as well as ravines and pillar-like formations.
For nature conservation and for the convenience of visitors, there are trails and picnic areas in the vicinity of Sietenesis.
The Gauja River flows into the northern part of Sietinez and makes a turn. When viewed from the river, the rock rises almost vertically at the base, forming a concave slope towards the top. It is 200 meters long and about 13 meters high, with pale yellow sandstone of the Gauja formation protruding up to 6 meters from the water level.
