The Northern Fort is an integral part of the Liepaja Fortress. Here you can walk through underground labyrinths and bunkers, get information about the Liepaja fortress, its history and construction.

At the end of the 19th century, in the territory where Karosta is now located, in the center of Liepaja and not far from the southern border of the city, several fortifications were built to protect the naval base from possible enemy attack.

The Northern Fort is the most famous and visually impressive part of the Liepaja Fortress. Its historical name is Fortification Battery No. 1.

Like Karosta, the Northern Fort was a closed military territory during the years of Soviet occupation. Today, these partially exploded labyrinths of history are available for free exploration.

However, when visiting the North Fort, you need to be very careful. The steep shore of the Baltic Sea in Karosta and other places in Latvia is dangerous, as parts of it can suddenly collapse.

For this reason, walking under the ruins of the fort is prohibited.
