The only biosphere reserve in Latvia, covering the 60 km Vidzeme coastline of the Gulf of Riga and large areas of the North Vidzeme region, includes one of the largest areas of raised bogs in the Baltic countries, as well as the largest area of littoral or rand meadows in Latvia.
Severovidzeme Biosphere Reserve is the only specially protected natural area of its kind in Latvia, covering 457,600 hectares of land and 16,750 hectares of sea. The reserve was created in 1997 and already on December 15, 1997 it was recognized as a protected area of international importance within the framework of the UNESCO program. It includes not only natural objects, but also humans as one of the elements - internationally significant natural and landscape values are preserved, ensuring sustainable social and economic development.
The territory of the reserve includes several protected natural areas territories, dendrological plantings, geological and geomorphological nature, as well as historical monuments.
