Every traveler who wants to get to know Daugavpils should visit Church Hill, which brings together churches of four different denominations. Daugavpils Church Hill is located at a considerable distance from the city center, in the Jaunbuve district (new building). This area was built in 1865 after the approval of the land use plan called Dinaburg (one of the early names of the city of Daugavpils). At that time, Jaunbuve consisted mainly of one-story wooden houses. At the end of the 19th century, red brick buildings also began to appear. At the turn of the century the population began to grow. There was a need to build churches in this area.
Due to the many sacred buildings, the area received the name Church Hill. Church Hill is a unique place in Daugavpils. Churches of all four main religious denominations of Latgale exist in a relatively small area. This complex creates a unique panorama of Daugavpils. The churches became not only the religious center of the Jaunbuwe region, but also its architectural dominant.
The complex of buildings contributes to the panorama of the city with its variety of architectural styles: from Baroque and Neo-Gothic to Byzantine. Over the course of a century, churches have survived different times and political regimes. The sacred buildings were destroyed several times, but each time they were restored.
