The White Dune is one of the attractions of Saulkrasti, on the coast of the Vidzeme Bay. The dune offers a magnificent view of the sea, the mouth of the Inchupe River and the extensive beach.
The White Dune was formed when the wind carried beach sand over the clayey silt of the Baltic ice lake. Its 18-meter-high white sandy outcrop once helped local fishermen find their way home. The dune gets its name from its white, hardened layers of sand, similar to sandstone.
The area has been replanted and the slopes of the dune have been stabilized. Although the dune is covered with pine forest, its steep slope facing the sea is still visible.
On the way to the White Dune you will see linden trees, named after the Russian Empress Catherine II. Legend has it that Catherine II planted these trees while vacationing on the coast of Pabazhi.
The sunset path, about 4 kilometers long, winds from the White Dune to the center Saulkrasti. Walking along this path, you will be able to see the typical landscape of Saulkrasti, a wide sandy beach and dunes, the Peterupi River and tall growing pine trees. Several vantage points along the trail offer beautiful views of the river valley and the sea.
