Jaffa is one of the oldest cities in the world. The first written mention of it is found in the chronicles of the pharaoh Thutmose III, where it is reported that Jaffa was captured in the 15th century BC. Legend says that the name of the city is connected with the name of one of Noah's sons - Yaphet, who built a port here after the Flood. According to another version - the name Jaffa comes from the Hebrew word "yafa" - "beautiful." Jaffa belonged to the Egyptians, Philistines, Jews, Persians, Phoenicians, Romans, Greeks - and each nation left its mark on the history of the ancient city. There are many legends and traditions associated with this place. Biblical tradition claims that under King Solomon, Lebanese cedars were fused through the oldest port in the world of Jaffa to build the First Temple. From here sailed the prophet Jonah, swallowed during the storm by a huge whale, which three days later spat it back to the shore of Jaffa. Greek myths say that it was here that the beautiful Andromeda was chained to a rock. According to Christian writings, it was in Jaffa that Saint Peter was imprisoned - in the house of Simon the tanner, and it was here that he healed Tabitha. Currently, the ancient city is combined with modern Tel Aviv and the full name of the city is Tel Aviv - Jaffa. In Jaffa, there are numerous churches and monasteries belonging to various Christian denominations.
