Hot springs in Wahawa
Sri Lanka, Ampara

In the pastoral village of Wahawa in Padiyatalawa, eighteen hot water springs are scattered throughout the village, with tanks built around to store the water, which is available at different temperature levels. They can be found in gardens, forested areas and paddy fields and provide a perpetual source of hot water for villagers. However, the most unusual spring of all is the artesian well, from which hot water flows twelve feet and provides visitors and villagers with refreshing hot showers.

Hot springs found along a narrow strip stretching from Hambantota to Trincomalee, occur within two main geological units - the Highland and Vijaya complexes. These springs are superficial indications of hidden underground heat sources, such as huge masses of "hot dry rocks", "deep-extending fault zones" or hidden magma chambers.

Thermal spring temperatures range from 350 to 610 degrees Celsius, and so far only limited preliminary scientific research has been carried out without detailed geological studies, geophysical surveys and test drilling.
