Schaerbeek cemetery
Belgium, Brussels

Although more discreet than Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, Schaerbeek Cemetery can also be considered an important stop on any excursion for visitors to the Belgian capital. It offers a tranquil setting to stroll around and meet some of the iconic figures who have left their mark on Brussels. Some of them are associated with surrealism, such as Magritte and his wife or the poet Marcel Marion, who sends us this message from the grave: Il n'y a aucun mérite à être quoi que ce soit (There is no merit in being something... That). The Schaerbeek cemetery is also the resting place of many other prominent figures, such as the stalwart André De Jong, the explorer Ernest Cambier or the statesman and writer Louis Bertrand.
