Colonnades are one of the most famous buildings of the city of Batumi. The idea of their creation belongs to the Batumi doctor Ivane Mchedlidze. He brought their project from the Italian city of Sorrento, in which, in 1933-1934, was on a business trip. Further, the project was implemented under the guidance of the famous Batumi architect Bogdan Kirakosyan.
The colonnades played the role of a gate leading to the embankment. It should be noted that at that time, the seashore was relatively closer than now. Over time, the coastline moved back, and the sea receded significantly. Colonnades and now remain the hallmark of the city, decorating Batumi Boulevard.
Similar colonnades were also built at the entrance to the Park named after May 6.
