The Giant Mountains (Karkonosze)
Poland, Jelenia Gora

The Giant Mountains (Karkonosze) is the highest and largest ridge of the Sudetenland, stretching across the Czech-Polish transboundary region: from the Lubawski Gate in the east (Lubava Pass, 511 m above sea level) to Jakuszyce in the west (Szklarska Pass, 886 meters above sea level seas). The highest peak of the Krkonoše - Sněžka (1603 m above sea level) - is also the highest peak of the Cordillera of the Sudetenland. The Krkonoše also remains the highest mountain range in the entire European Highlands, stretching from France, Belgium, Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland to the Carpathians. Thus, along with the Jizera Mountains, the Giant Mountains act as the first (orographic) natural barrier to humid Atlantic air masses coming from the west. It is this feature that largely determines the climate of these mountains. The average annual air temperature here ranges from 8°C in Jelenia Góra to 0.7°C at the top of Sněžka. The average level of precipitation starts from 700 mm in the foothills and can reach 1400-1500 mm at the peaks. These features made all levels of altitudinal zonality (along with climate and plant variations) more typical of high mountains, despite the relatively low altitude of the Krkonoše.

The fauna of the Krkonoše is distinguished by a great variety of species. This is due to the presence of plant floors of different climates and a diverse mosaic of plant communities. In addition, the sculpture of the relief - especially above the upper border of the forest - distinguishes the Giant Mountains from the background of other mountain ranges of the Sudetes. Lakes and glacial cauldrons, steep rocky slopes, peat bogs - characteristic of the landscape of these mountains - have become home to many valuable representatives of the animal world of the Karkonose.
The number of species living in the Giant Mountains is as follows: invertebrates - at least 15 thousand species, vertebrates - more than 320 species, of which: fish - 2 species, amphibians - 6 species, reptiles - 6 species, nesting migratory birds - about 200 species, mammals - almost 60 species.
