Shiva statue on Om beach in Gokarna
India, Gokarna

Two hours drive from Karvar is the fishing village of Murdeshwar, which houses a grandiose complex of buildings and structures that amazes tourists with its beauty, variety and size. The complex is built on the hill of Kanduk, which is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Arabian Sea. The legend says that it was on this hill that the demon Ravana threw matter, which was covered with lings, donated by Shiva.
The main granite temple of the complex is dedicated to Shiva. The temple was built in 1542 during the reign of King Devaraus the Second. Opposite the temple, there is a twenty-story Raja tower. This is the tallest Indian temple tower. A modern elevator will lift travelers to the eighteenth floor of the tower, from which the unforgettable beauty of the sea coast of the northern part of Karnataka opens.
Around the tower there are a number of sculptures and statues dedicated to the Indian Gods. The largest of them, 37 meters high, is a statue depicting God Shiva. The gilded sculpture literally shines, reflecting the sun's rays against the backdrop of an unusually beautiful sea.
The next stop on our sightseeing route will take place in the small town of Gokarna. Thousands of pilgrims come here from all over India to perform the necessary rite of repentance and remember their departed ancestors. According to ancient legend, being in this sacred place of India, you can immediately be freed from hundreds of all kinds of sins. According to Hindu mythology, it was in these fertile lands that God Shiva was sent to repent. Here he came out of the ear of a cow of Mother Earth, and in honor of this momentous moment the city got its beautiful name. The word Gokarna literally means "Cow's Ear." The main attraction of the city of Gokarna is the temple chariot ratha, which pilgrims carry around the city during festivals.
The most beautiful beach of the coast, it is undoubtedly Om beach. The soft sand and gloss of the coastal cliffs, reminiscent in shape of the sacred sign of Om and the purest water of the Arabian Sea, leave an indelible impression and remain in memory for a long time.
