Vienna Woods
Austria, Bezirk Wien-Umgebung

The Vienna Forest is one of Austria's most striking sights, located in the vicinity of Vienna. On the one hand it is framed by the Danube and vineyards, and on the other hand - the spa area of Baden and Bad Vöslau with mineral and thermal springs. The forest covers a vast territory, covered with dense forests, colorful valleys and powerful mountains. The Vienna Forest includes 1250 km² of wooded area, and since 2005, 1050 km² of the Vienna Forest located in Vienna and Lower Austria are included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Parks. “Green lungs” is what the Austrians call this tourist area. How old the Vienna Forest is is not known, but for sure, more than 1000. It is written in an ancient letter in which it was first mentioned. The letter is stored in the Knights Library of the Vienna City Hall. No one knows how miraculously the forest survived. In the 19th century, the forest was nearly put into processing. The treasury of Austria after the war with Prussia was devastated, and it urgently needed to be replenished. But thanks to the stubbornness of the former officer of His Imperial Majesty Hera Sheftel, the forest was not cut down. This man launched a real wave of protest in the press. He founded the Movement for the Salvation of the Vienna Woods. It took two years for the forest to be left alone and thus preserved for posterity. Moreover, it is not clear how the forest survived two world wars. The Vienna Woods is a mysterious place with a great historical past. Here the Empress of Austria, the wife of Franz Joseph, rested from the bustle of palace life. Here the love tragedy of the heir to the throne Rudolph and his beloved Maria Evenings broke out. It is still unknown who killed this couple in love. The Vienna Woods is also interesting for its historical sights. For example, in the northern part of the Vienna Woods, 10 kilometers from Vienna, the small but very beautiful town of Stift Klosterneuburg is located. In this ancient city is the most famous monastery of Augustinian monks in Europe, built more than 1000 years ago. The "Holy Palace" was built back in 1108. Now the monastery has the largest museum in Europe, exhibiting works of art from the post-war period. The temple also houses the old enamel Verdun altar, created in the 12th century by the artist Nikolus Verdun. In the town of Laxenburg, on the outskirts of Vienna, the Blue Court, the imperial summer palace built in 1752, is located. There is also an English park and the pseudo-Gothic castle of Franzensburg in the middle of the lake with a rich collection of works of art collected by Emperor Franz Joseph. You can get to the island only by ferry. In the southern part of the Vienna Woods, in the city of Mödling there is a tower of an ancient fortress with a magnificent panorama of the surroundings. On the outskirts of the town in the village of Hinterbrühl, there is the largest cave lake on the continent - 6,200 m2. The temperature in the cave all year round +9 degrees Celsius. Surrounded by vineyards, the Vienna Forest is an ideal place for winemaking, whose development history in this region has about two thousand years. Viticulture here originated during the Roman legionnaires. The most popular wine centers are Klosterneuburg, Gumpoldskirchen, Bad Feslau, Baden and Perchtoldsdorf. Any tourist can cheer himself up in one of the local wine cellars. In each of them, in the evenings, shramli music or gypsy violin sounds. For tourists who prefer wellness, instead of a glass of amber wine, the Vienna Forest offers healing waters and the atmosphere of the Biedermeier palaces of the Baden resort, located in the foothills of the Wiener Wald. Here, at one time, the Russian Tsar Peter I was resting. In Baden, the Hungarian composer Imre Kalman, as well as Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss and many other celebrities whose images can often be found on the narrow streets of the city, liked to spend the summer. In Baden is the oldest and largest casino in Austria. In particularly busy areas of the biosphere park, visitors can use the services of information points. Along with information on the nature of the landscape with its typical flora and fauna, here you can also get recommendations regarding recreation and leisure opportunities in the surroundings, as well as information on traditional local products.
