“Baku Acropolis”, “Old City”, “Inner City” - as soon as this unique historical ensemble is located, located right in the center of Baku. "Icheri Sheher" is the heart of the city. It was in this place, on a hill near the sea, ancient Baku was born. The city grew and in the XII century around the perimeter it was surrounded by fortress walls. Therefore, "Icheri Sheher" is often also called a fortress. Behind the dilapidated fortress walls, many unique monuments have been preserved: the Shirvanshahs palace complex with a tomb, sofa, mosque; "Giz Galasy" ("Maiden's Tower"); mosques and minarets, the remains of caravanserais, baths. The buildings of the old fortress are of a special character. Due to the lack of territory of the building, “wall to wall” was erected here from ancient times. There are no gardens, courtyards are extremely small and are separated by "threads" of narrow streets, alleys and dead ends. Of interest is the fortress wall itself. At one time, Baku had two of them, and they were separated by moats, but at the beginning of the 19th century, the city grew so fast that the outer wall had to be demolished and houses built. Only the inner wall remains. It preserved 25 towers and 5 gates. It is said that back in the 30s of the XX century there were more than 900 buildings in the fortress, and by the beginning of the XXI century only half remained.
