The Untersberg mountain range, located on the border of Austria and Germany, is a natural park, a mountain range with peaks Berchtesgadener Hochthron (1972 m), Rauheck (1892 m), Gamsalpkopf (1888 m), Salzburger Hochthron (1853 m), Geiereck (1805 m ) Today it is full of tourists. Indeed, there is represented a huge variety of active leisure activities. This is hiking, climbing, winter sports, air sports and much more. Different types of ski slopes, cottages for living on the top of the mountain, a restaurant, rental of sports equipment, enchanting views of the mountain peaks and panoramas of Salzburg, a mesmerizing ice cave, cable car, many legends and beliefs - this is a small list of what tourists expect for Untersberg. So, let's start in order. The path to the top of the mountain lies on the Untersberbahn cable car. From the panoramic cabins designed for 50 people, a stunning view opens up, and the heart begins to die already at the beginning of the journey. Indeed, the elevation difference that you will overcome in 9 minutes is 1320 meters, the maximum height of the funicular above the ground is 286 meters, and the distance from the landing station to the first support is 1,548 meters. The cable car leads to the lowest peak of the mountain range at the peak Geiereck (Top of the kite). Here begins the mountain range, which occupies an area of 70 km2. If you are not a fan of extreme sports, do not hesitate, you will not be bored here. Hiking trails are available in the park. From the Austrian side of Untersberg you can get to the famous Kolovrat caves, as well as to the huge ice Shelenberg caves. The world's largest ice cave, Eisriesenwelt, is also located here. There are about 500 caves in the mountain, of which 110 have not yet been explored. Perhaps because of this, the history of the Untersberg Mountains is fanned by legends about goblins and gnomes guarding their treasures, about the great kings resting in the bowels of the mountains, about the spirits living there. Untersberg's most famous legend formed the basis of the tales of the Brothers Grimm. Legend has it that for three centuries now enchanted Charlemagne has been sleeping under the mountain. His princes, knights and servants sleep with him. The king sits at a huge stone table and wakes up only when his beard is twisted around the table three times. When this happens, the Golden Age will come on earth. They also talk about a monk living in grief. The first mention of it was made in 1529 by Lazarusem Gitschner. The man got inside the enchanted mountain and stayed there for seven whole days. In one of the caves he met a monk who showed him underground corridors, halls and churches. In 1858, a whole wedding procession disappeared here. The groom, having heard legends about the mountain, jokingly began to call the spirits of the mountain. He asked them to give a present to his bride. A gray-haired old man came out of the mountain. He invited a fun company to the underground cave. People agreed. Going down, they saw many rich halls, in one of which a table was laid. After a hearty dinner and wine, people fell asleep, and when they woke up, they were able to independently get out of the cave. There was only one thing but ... No one could recognize the surrounding area and understand the language spoken by passers-by. Having come to their village, they also did not recognize it. The young people went to the church, where the wedding took place, and told everything to the unfamiliar priest. He discovered the old folios and found a record that once a wedding was lost in the area, but it was 500 years ago. Today, Untersberg Mountain continues to live its magical life. In August 1987, a young married couple from Munich and their girlfriend came for a walk in the mountains. Young people disappeared, only their car in the parking lot spoke of their presence in the area. Three months later, they called their relatives from a cruise in the Red Sea. How they got there could not explain. A few years ago, a whole group of tourists disappeared here, who appeared in the Middle East. Esotericists and mystics say that once a year a portal of time opens on August 15, the day of the Ascension of the Lord. And the portal gate is located in one of Untersberg's caves. The mountain range is popular with tourists, not only because of its fantastic beauties and fairy tales, but also because of its good location. It is located just 16 kilometers from Salzburg. And finally, it’s important to remember that when planning to visit Untersberg, you should have comfortable shoes and warm clothes.
