Maa Paliokastro
Cyprus, Coral Bay

Maa Paliokastro is a small peninsula in Coral Bay. Archaeological studies of 1970-1980, conducted by archaeologist Porfirios Dikeios, give reason to believe that the peninsula began to settle down at the end of the Stone Age.
The landing of the Mykene on the local shores occurred presumably around 1200 BC. The peninsula had an excellent location for those times, ideal for building a fortified city. There are sandy harbors on both sides of it, there is a source of fresh water Vrizi tis Maas not far from the bays, its slopes are impregnable, and the narrow isthmus between the mainland and the peninsula could easily be closed by a powerful wall.
Settled on the Maa, the Mykene engaged in farming, hunting and fishing. Found objects that indicate that metallurgy and weaving were also developed. The Mykene built large and solid houses. In the center of their dwellings they erected centers.
The first settlement lasted only about a quarter of a century and was destroyed by fire. The rescued residents returned after some time and restored what they could. In front of the western part of the wall, another wall was built on the cape, and the former large public complexes were divided into separate residential cells. The second stage of the development of Maa ended by 1150 BC - the settlement was finally abandoned for an unknown reason. At a later time, the site was occasionally and briefly re-populated.
Today's visitors can walk through the ruins of an ancient settlement, take pictures on the remains of the Mycenaean walls and enjoy the excellent views that open from the cape. On the territory of Maa, tourists are completely left to their own devices. For those who want to learn a little more about the history of the settlement, the Museum of Mycenaean Colonization of Cyprus is working on the territory.
