The London National Gallery is one of the best collections of Western European painting in the world and one of the most visited art museums in the world. The gallery contains 2,300 paintings, from masters of the late Middle Ages to French impressionists. It was founded in 1824 on the basis of the collection of J.J. Angerstein. It stores collections of European schools of painting represented by outstanding works of art, including Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna in the Rocks, J. Van Eyck's Portrait of the Arnolfini Spouses, Venus with a Mirror by D. Velazquez, masterpieces by Duccio, P. Uccello, Piero della Francesca, Giovanni Bellini, Titian, H. Holbein the Younger, Rembrandt, T. Gainsborough, W. Hogarth, F. Goya, J. Constable, P. Cezanne, W. van Gogh and others. Located in a building built in the style of classicism in the 1830s (architect William Wilkins).
