Built in the early 1800s, St. John's Cathedral, Belize's oldest surviving colonial building, is also the oldest Anglican Church in Central America. St. John's Cathedral is located directly across the street from the House of Culture, at the intersection of Regent and Albert Streets in Belize. The church was built by slaves of bricks brought to Belize as rubble in the hulls of ships sailing from Europe. The construction took eight years, and in the decoration of the building you can find many original architectural delights, including intricate stained glass windows, decorative mahogany benches and an ancient organ. Great Britain coronated 4 kings in this cathedral. The local Miskito tribe, living along the coast between Honduras and Nicaragua, chose the British as defenders rather than the Spanish colonists, and the coronations were a short-lived attempt to protect English interests in the area.
