The Crookd Three Wildlife Sanctuary is a marshy bird paradise, a nature reserve created in 1984 to protect rare species of native and migratory birds. Located 33 miles from Belize on the northern highway, the reserve consists of a network of inland lagoons, swamps and waterways near the village of Cricd Three. Black Howler Monkeys are also residents of this reserve, as are the Morellet crocodiles, noses, and several varieties of turtles and iguanas. The reserve has a nesting population of Stork Jabiru - the largest flying bird in the western hemisphere, with a wingspan of 10-12 feet. Storks arrive in November to nest on trees in the lowlands of pine savannahs. The reserve is home to thousands of migratory birds from November to June. Approximately 260 species of birds were seen on its territory between February and May.
