Fodele is a small charming village in Crete, 30 km from Heraklion. It is located at some distance from the sea, on the river bank, among the dense green alleys. Oranges, lemons and tangerines grow in the village. Everything grows here, but most of all sweet and juicy oranges, the smell of which envelops the whole village with a fragrant cloud.
The famous artist El Greco was born in the village of Fodele in 1541. A Renaissance master who became famous in Spain, he studied in Greece and Italy before world fame came to him.
In Fodel, the El Greco Museum is located, in the house where this artist was born, you can see copies of his best paintings. The Cretans are very proud that such an outstanding person was born on their land.
Among the architectural monuments of antiquity in this small village you will see the Byzantine church of St. Panagia, built in the 11th century, and the Monastery of St. Panteleimon.
