House-Museum of Alexander Spendiarov
Armenia, Yerevan

The house-museum of Alexander Spendiarov (Spendiaryan) was founded in 1963 in the house where the composer lived the last years of his life in 1926-1928. The museum received its first visitors on November 25, 1967. This was the first musical house museum founded by the daughter of the composer Marina Spendiarova, it was she who wrote the application for the creation of the museum to the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1924, Yerevan was a small provincial town, with dirty, crooked streets and adobe houses. The building where the museum is located and the great Armenian composer spent his last years was one of the first multi-storey buildings in Armenia, currently included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of Yerevan. Initially, the museum’s collection consisted of 400 museum exhibits, which were mainly donated to the museum by Spendiarov’s daughters. These are the personal belongings of the composer, a student of Klenovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, his archive. Spendiarov was one of the founders of Armenian classical music, a talented composer, a prominent musical and public figure, and conductor. After the opening of the museum, the number of exhibits was constantly replenished, and, after several years, totaled 1345 items. These are printed and handwritten notes by the composer, letters, documents, photographs and books. During its existence, the museum has become a popular cultural institution. Literary evenings are held here, memorable open-air concerts are organized. A museum park has been opened, in the creation of which famous artists, musicians and writers took part. In 2011 - 2012, the house-museum was restored. From December 3, 2013, a new art exhibition was opened for visitors.
