Tirana
Albania, Tirana city

The city of Tirana has been the capital of Albania since 1920 (the city was founded in 1614). The city is compact enough and pleasant for exploring on foot. Most excursions in Tirana begin with a large Skanderbeg Square in the city center, bounded on the east by the heights of Mount Dajti (1612 m.). The nearby market is also worth a detailed study - it is unlikely that anywhere else in Europe it will be possible to find a real oriental bazaar with all its attributes (including pickpockets). The National History Museum is the largest and richest museum in Albania, it is located next to the 15-story Tirana International Hotel - the tallest building in the country (a huge mosaic mural covers the entire facade of the building). To the east of the hotel is the Palace of Culture, which has its own theater, restaurant, cafe and art galleries, and clearly stands out from the low buildings of the capital with its "Soviet" architecture. On the south side of the building is the entrance to the National Library, and in front of it is the dome and minaret of the Etem May mosque (1789-1823), one of the most expressive buildings in the city. Near the mosque is the clock tower of Tirana, built in 1830. Along the embankment of the Lana River, south of the capital, are the white marble walls of the former Enver Hoxha Museum ("Pyramid"), which is sometimes used as a center for various exhibitions and will become the International Cultural Center in the future (it is planned to host the largest disco in Europe here). Further south, on the Deschmoret-e-Combit Boulevard, is located the ultra-modern Palace of Congress and the Archaeological Museum, which has a fantastic selection of exhibits from prehistoric times to the medieval period. The sights of Tirana include the Museum of National Culture, the Museum of Natural History and the beautiful Art Gallery. The best view of the city opens from the “Cemetery of the Martyrs”, which is also worth visiting the monument “Mother Albania”.
