The National Library of Bhutan was established in 1967 with the aim of collecting and preserving ancient Bhutanese written and printed resources. It houses a large and growing collection of manuscripts, books, scriptures and written documents, as well as a large number of wooden blocks used to print traditional religious books. The writings and documents housed in the library's collection and archives are a national treasure of the country, a monument to Bhutanese history, religion, medicine, art and culture.<br />The National Library in Thimphu is the repository of a grand collection of ancient Buddhist literature known as the Choikei Collection - according to the name of a religious script that was used to record texts by Northern Buddhism. The library also contains manuscripts written in Tibetan and Junk, the national language of the Bhutanese.<br />The library contains the largest book in Bhutan; employees turn one page a day. This book is a huge photo album about Bhutan.<br />A small selection of foreign literature is also presented here (mostly books by English authors devoted to the study of Buddhism and the culture of Bhutan and the Himalayan peoples).
