Spread on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic, the ancient Bavarian forest occupies about 2,020 square kilometers. Powerful trees part here only along the banks of rivers, in front of lakes and around scattered swamps. The Bavarian forest is the largest surviving, although forestry has developed to a certain extent in the last century and a half. Nevertheless, some parts of the forest remained almost untouched, mainly due to their remoteness. In 1969, the Bavarian Forest National Park was established here. Since then, due to environmental actions, traces of human intervention in the life of the forest have been reduced to zero: tree felling has stopped, drainage ditches are blocked, and, therefore, the upper bogs are gradually being restored.
Conifers reign here. But on the slopes there are maple, elm, ash, alder, beech and linden. In this mixed forest it is easy to find a fern, a female coder, an extremely rare plant - Hungarian gentian, various flowering plants, for example, woodruff, lily, black eye, the latter, by the way, is a sure sign that the forest is ancient. The whole forest is permeated by streams running down the mountain slopes and feeding the upland marshes. Lush vegetation reigns on the shores - luxurious sheets of alpine thistle with blue-violet flowers alternate with the yellow color of the Austrian Doronik. There are other hygrophilous plants - horsetail and afris, and creeping pine, crowberry, blueberry and carnivorous sundew grow on boggy bogs. In a word, a paradise for a biologist!
Forests and swamps amaze with the richness of animal life. Wild deer horns touch the paws of the branches, and the lynx, otter and marten hide from the intruder. Forest voices of many birds. Measures woodpecker. Which one is difficult to understand, there are four types: large motley, white-backed, three-fingered and black. Birds of prey are also numerous in the Bavarian forest, especially the common beetle, hawks. Work is also underway to return species such as eagle owl, long-tailed owl and raven to these ancient forests.
