Church of St. George
Bulgaria, Kyustendil

The medieval Church of St. George is the oldest surviving medieval church in Kyustendil. There is speculation that the coffin of the Bulgarian Tsar Mikhail Shishman, who was killed in the battle of Velbyzhd in 1330, is located here. In the XIX century, the church was partially destroyed by the Turks, but in 1881-1882 it was restored. The frescoes that painted the walls and the arch date back to two different periods - the 12th-14th centuries and the 15th-16th centuries.
The church is a cultural monument of national importance.
