Berlin Wall
Germany, Berlin

Erected on August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall divided the city and turned western Berlin into a kind of island in the middle of the German Democratic Republic. It has become a death trap for many people. On the western side, the wall was covered with political slogans and painted with colorful paintings. After the fall of the wall, thousands of people, armed with hammers, tried to break off a valuable piece of the motley wall. The East-Side-Gallery, located hundreds of meters away, houses the largest open-air exhibition. Well-known artists of the Graffiti style used the wall as their paintings. In the Berlin area of Wedding, there is a memorial site with a guarded passage and part of the wall documenting the construction of the border. In many areas where the border passed, crosses were set in memory of the victims. In other areas, asphalt is marked with red stripes in the places where the wall stood. The Berlin Wall lasted 28 years. Built in August 1961. Destroyed in November 1989.
