Bodbe Monastery
Georgia, Sighnaghi

Bodbe Monastery is 2 km away. from Sighnaghi, about s. Kedels. According to the Georgian annals "The Address of Kartli", the construction of the church over the grave of St. Nina dates back to the reign of St. King Mirian: having founded a convent here, the king sacrificed many villages and lands to him.
The imperial dynasty of Kakheti and Kartli especially cared for the material support and welfare of the monastery. It can be assumed that until the 30s. XIII century The Bodbe Monastery remained a significant Christian center of Georgia. Since the 30s. XIII century by the XV century information about the monastery has not been preserved, which is associated with the invasion of the Mongols and the strong destruction of both the diocese and the monastery. In the 15th century, with the formation of the independent kingdom of Kakheti, Bodbe regained its former glory as a religious center. However, already in the XVI century. the situation again sharply worsened due to Iranian expansion, which led to the abolition of the convent. But the ruling dynasty always showed special care for Bodba, which was manifested in the award of precious church utensils, manuscripts and books, the strengthening and renewal of monastery churches and premises, in exemption from state taxation, the granting of villages and significant land holdings.
According to D. Purtzeladze, even during the reign of Archbishop Vasily of Bodbi at the Bodbi Monastery, a school was established in 1617, in which, in addition to church subjects, secular sciences were also taught: philosophy, physics, geometry. This school was of particular concern to Bodbeli;
After the revolution, the monastery was closed. In 1995, the Holy Synod of the Georgian Church decided to renew the Church of St. Nina, in connection with which the Catholicos-Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II blessed to begin archaeological excavations during which they discovered: a small vessel with an inscription of the 17th century, fragments of a faience vessel with blue ornament of the 11th-12th centuries, a copper vessel with an inscription about it belonging to Bishop John of Bodbe, a bowl with a multi-colored ornament, similar in style and technique to the East Georgian ceramics of the 1st century, a bell dated to the Middle Ages. Found items are stored in the church of St. Nina.
In the gorge in the northeast of the monastery is the source of St. Nina ("Ninos tskaro") with healing water. Currently, there is built a bathhouse and a small church in the name of the parents of St. Nina, Saints of Zebulun and Susanna.
