The Great Basilica in Butrint dates back to the end of V - the beginning of the VI centuries of our era. Despite its large size, the basilica was not the main temple of Butrint, it was built by a private person, most likely, with the aim of burial of members of his family here. The basilica was a building consisting of a central nave surrounded by walkways separated by closed colonnades. At the eastern end was a triangular transept and a central pentagonal apse. The large pier, which separates the passages that are visible today, is part of a later reconstruction, as well as paved stone slabs - the original pavement was previously made with curly mosaics. Mosaic floor sections are still visible in the central aisle near the altar. They depict living multicolor ivy groups characteristic of Nikopol mosaic.
