The first school in Kyustendil was opened in 1820 near the Church of the Assumption. In a small building they taught to read and write in Bulgarian, to sing in a choir. The school lasted until 1849, when a new school building was built. Declared a cultural monument, this school is still a significant cultural center of the city. It has a hall suitable for chamber concerts, exhibitions and literary readings. In the basement of the school you can see the remains of the 4th century Roman wall on which the building was erected.
