Stone wedding
Bulgaria, Zimzelen

Stone wedding is a beautiful and unusual group of stone formations. This natural phenomenon is 5 km from Kardzhali, in the Zimzelen village area. According to scientists, the Stone Wedding began to form 40 million years ago, due to underwater volcanic activity, resulting in rhyolite tuffs. Later, after the sea moved offshore, these rocks were exposed to rain, wind and the sun, which formed their true shape. Various minerals in the composition of the rocks give them a variety of colors and shades.
The name of this natural phenomenon is due to the fact that rock formations are similar to people gathered in one place. The legend says that once a guy from the village of Zimzelen fell in love with a girl from a neighboring village. During the wedding, on the way to Zimzelen, a strong wind suddenly broke out, which tore the veil from the bride’s head. All guests were numbed before her unprecedented beauty, and the father-in-law envied his son. Due to the unclean thoughts of the father-in-law, the natural forces turned everyone into stone. Only the groom remained alive, but with tears in his eyes he asked the natural element to turn it into stone. The wind complied with his request. And the natural phenomenon of Stone Wedding to this day stands in a puddle, which, according to legend, was formed from not dried up tears of the ill-fated groom.
