Python Protected Area
Saint Lucia, Soufriere

The Python Sanctuary is the only place on the island of Saint Lucia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The vast territory of 2900 hectares in the area of Soufriere includes the peaks of Gro-Piton and Petit Piton - volcanoes sticking out from the sea for 700 m. They are interconnected by the Python-Mitan range. This is a geothermal area with many boiling sulfur springs (solfatars). The marine territory of the reserve is coral reefs, which are distinguished by biodiversity: 168 species of fish, 60 species of intestinal - corals, mollusks, sponges.
The predominant type of vegetation on land is tropical rainforests and subtropical wetlands; on the tops are dry forests and swampy elfin associations. Here 250 species of plants grow, of which 8 are rare trees. 27 species of birds (five of which are endemic), 3 species of local rodents, 1 species of possums, three bats, eight species of reptiles and three amphibians live on Mount Gro-Python.
