Christiansborg Palace
Denmark, Copenhagen

The palace is located on the site of an ancient fortress, which was built by Bishop Absalon in 1167 at the foundation of Copenhagen. The ruins of this fortress have been preserved and can be seen by going down to the cellars of the palace. The palace complex, the first buildings of which were erected at the beginning of the XVIII century, was repeatedly rebuilt, and what we see today was built in the period from 1907 to 1928 in the style of the new Baroque. Kristiansborg Palace stands on an island called Palace Island. The total length of the canals surrounding the palace is about 2 km, 8 bridges connecting the palace with Copenhagen are thrown across them. Now the Danish Parliament (Folketing) is sitting in the Christiansborg Palace. In addition, the palace houses the Supreme Court, the Office of the Prime Minister of Denmark, the Royal Receptions and the Great Hall. The Royal Receptions are located in the northern part of Christiansborg Palace and include the Queen’s Private Library, Audience Chambers, the Grand Royal Hall and the Throne Hall. Both the throne and the interiors were saved during the fire of 1884, which destroyed the rest of the palace. Near the parliament building are the Royal Library, the Theater Museum and the Royal Arsenal Museum with a collection of old clothes, carriages and firearms. There are still functioning royal stables and a parade ground for dressage.
