Chimaera Flames
Turkey, Cirali

The Flames of Chimaera (Turkish: Yanartaş) is one of Turkey’s most mysterious natural phenomena, located on the country’s southwestern coast near the village of Çıralı, close to the ancient city of Olympos. This site is famous for its eternal flames—naturally occurring fires that emerge from cracks in the rocky hillside, a spectacle that has fascinated travelers for thousands of years and is surrounded by myths and legends.

The phenomenon is caused by the emission of flammable gases, primarily methane, from deep underground. These gases ignite upon contact with oxygen, creating a mesmerizing effect of "eternal fires" that burn even in the rain. In ancient times, these flames served as a navigational landmark for sailors, and some historians believe they were the origin of the myth of the Chimaera—a monstrous creature with the head of a lion, the body of a goat, and the tail of a serpent that, according to legend, breathed fire.

The Flames of Chimaera are especially captivating at night when the flames glow brightly against the dark sky, creating an almost mystical atmosphere. The trail leading to the site is a moderately steep hike through pine forests, taking about 20–30 minutes to ascend. Those who make the climb are rewarded with the surreal sight of the burning rocks beneath the vast, starry sky.

Ancient sources mention that this area once housed a sanctuary dedicated to Hephaestus, the god of fire and craftsmanship. Archaeological findings suggest that rituals were indeed conducted here in antiquity, and remnants of temples and structures can still be seen nearby.

Today, the Flames of Chimaera remain a popular destination for nature lovers, mythology enthusiasts, and those fascinated by rare natural phenomena. It is one of the few places on Earth where visitors can witness "living fire" and experience the legendary past come to life in the glow of the eternal flames.
