Hassan II Mosque
Morocco, Casablanca

Hassan II Mosque is the second largest mosque in the world, located in Casablanca - the economic and business center of Morocco. Michelle Pinso, a French architect, designed the Hassan II Mosque and the adjacent minaret. The mosque building is designed to withstand strong earthquakes. At night, the lasers mounted on the minaret point toward Mecca. Today the minaret of the mosque is considered the highest in the world, its height is 210 meters.
The construction of the mosque began in 1986 and was completed in 1993, although it was planned to complete all the work back in 1989, by the 60th birthday of King Hassan II. Most of the materials used in the construction are of Moroccan origin, however, there are also imported parts, such as glass chandeliers or granite columns.
The mosque stands on a protruding piece of land that adjoins the coast from the Atlantic, so visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean.
To build a mosque in this place was the decision of King Hassan II, due to one of the interpretations of the sutra of the Qur'an, which says that the throne of God was built over water. The king wanted believers to be able to see God's creations, such as the sea or the ocean.
The mosque can accommodate more than 25,000 believers during prayers that take place on a glass floor. This unusual detail of the mosque allows you to kneel and pray over the water. The square that surrounds the mosque can accommodate more than 80,000 visitors. Hassan II Mosque has several modern features that have been added to provide believers with additional comfort. This, for example, underfloor heating, electronic doors, as well as a roof that can open.
There are many mosques in Morocco, most of which are closed to non-Muslims. Hassan II Mosque compares favorably in this regard - it is open to believers of any faiths. Everyone can come in and appreciate the beautiful decor of the interiors of the building.
