Open Air Museum Den Gamle By
Denmark, Aarhus

One of the unique sights of Aarhus, one of the three most popular, is the open-air museum Den Gamle By, located near the Old Town. Once there, you will have the impression that you were in the Middle Ages: old houses of the 16-17th centuries, carriages drive along the streets, residents in ancient national costumes. Here you will even see the forge. The museum was organized by the local teacher Peter Holm, in 1908 he proposed not to demolish the old mansion of the mayor of Aarhus, but to transfer it outside the city. After success at the National Exhibition, it was decided to open the Museum of the Old Mayor’s Mansion under Aarhus, and to appoint Peter Holm, who worked there for 31 years, as director. Unique buildings, souvenirs, books, furniture, tools, clothes, toys, dishes began to be brought here. Today, it is one of the most visited places in Denmark.
