BMW Museum in Munich
Germany, Munich

The opening of the BMW Museum was timed to coincide with the 1972 Olympics. The original building was built near the official headquarters of BMW, which is also known for its unique design - four silver cylinders suspended from the central column at a short distance from the ground. As conceived by the architects, the museum building in its form was to symbolize the gas tank cover of the car, however, the shape of the building in the Munich people evokes completely different associations, so the locals call it a “salad bowl”, “a bowl for soup” or “a pan for sausages”. From 2004 to 2008, the museum was under reconstruction, during which its area was expanded to 5000 square meters.
At the dawn of its existence, the Bavarian Motor Plant Company specialized in the production of aircraft engines, so the museum’s exposition includes not only all models of cars produced since the company’s inception, sports cars created together with the famous Lamborghini brand, motorcycles, but also aircraft engines and propellers. In addition to the already produced cars, the museum presents the company's developments over the past 20 years, and also made a kind of presentation of what is planned to be released in the future. In some cars on display, you can sit and inspect the interior from the inside, some can only be seen from the outside. In one of the exhibition halls, a bewitching installation is presented: many small steel balls, suspended on a thin fishing line from the ceiling, which, moving, take on a bizarre shape - this is a kinetic model of BMW. It is worth lingering in this room longer, and then you can see for yourself how the balls will take the form of the upper part of the car body.
