Kolsai Lakes
Kazakhstan, Almaty Province

The Kolsai Lakes are a natural treasure of southeastern Kazakhstan, nestled deep in the Tien Shan mountains among dense coniferous forests and alpine meadows. This stunning chain of three high-altitude lakes is located within a national park in the Almaty Region, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Often referred to as the "Kazakh Switzerland," the area is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, fresh mountain air, and crystal-clear waters.

The lakes are situated at different elevations: Lower Kolsai Lake sits at about 1,800 meters, Middle Kolsai at 2,250 meters, and Upper Kolsai near 3,000 meters above sea level. Each lake has its own unique character and water hue, but all are surrounded by spruce-covered slopes, rocky ridges, and colorful wildflowers. The deep blue waters reflect the surrounding mountains and sky, creating mirror-like vistas of pure serenity.

The Lower Lake is the most accessible and offers guesthouses, campsites, and picnic areas. From here, adventurous travelers can trek or ride on horseback along mountain trails to reach the more remote Middle and Upper Lakes. The journey requires physical stamina but rewards visitors with solitude, pristine nature, and sweeping panoramic views that remain unforgettable.

Beyond its beauty, the Kolsai Lakes area is home to a diverse ecosystem, including rare bird species, wild mammals, and endemic flora. Trout can be found in the lakes, although fishing is strictly regulated. For nature lovers and those seeking peace and inspiration, Kolsai offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from urban life and immerse fully in the harmony of mountains, forest, and water.
