Ruins of Paide's Defensive Tower Vallitorn and the Order's Hillfort on Vallimägi
Estonia, Paide

The ruins of Paide's Vallitorn tower and the Order's hillfort are located on Vallimägi Hill in the center of Paide, representing the historical core of the town. The hillfort was established in the second half of the 13th century, shortly after the St. George's Night Uprising in 1343, as a stronghold for the Livonian Order. The central element of the fortress was a powerful convent building, a type of castle typical for the Teutonic Order. The most prominent surviving structure is the defensive tower, known as Vallitorn. This tower, along with the surrounding fortifications, was significantly damaged during the Great Northern War. In the 19th century, the ruins were incorporated into a park, and the tower was partially restored. Today, the Vallitorn tower serves as a viewing platform, offering panoramic views of the town of Paide. The site is a protected cultural heritage monument and a key historical landmark, symbolizing the medieval origins and strategic importance of Paide in central Estonia.
