The Alexander railway bridge across the Volga was built in 1880 near Syzran. At the time of opening, the construction was the longest bridge in Europe (1436 meters). It was built by 2500 people.
Samarians twice could lose their much-needed structure, connecting the two banks of the river. In 1918, during the Civil War, two bridge spans were blown up, but they were later repaired. After 62 years, the Volgoneft 268 tanker crashed into the bridge. Fortunately, the damage to the bridge was again not too serious.
In 2010, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the bridge, a commemorative stele was opened.
