Church of Our Lady - Copenhagen Cathedral
Denmark, Copenhagen

The Church of Our Lady (Copenhagen Cathedral) is located in the Danish capital, next to the central building of the University of Copenhagen. The church building is striking in its strict beauty and grandeur. The Church of Our Lady was built on the site of a medieval cathedral burned down during the bombing of Copenhagen in 1807. The construction under the patronage of King Frederick VI was begun in 1817 and completed in 1829. Architect Christian Frederick Hansen designed the neoclassical cathedral building with a colonnade and a majestic pediment, except for the tower, which the townspeople demanded to be restored in the likeness of the old medieval tower. The tower has a height of 60 meters and is equipped with four bells, one of which is the oldest in Denmark and was cast in 1490. The Church of Our Lady is 83 meters long and 33 meters wide and can accommodate, with open galleries, more than 1,500 people. The interior is decorated with statues of the twelve apostles made of Italian Carrara marble. The statues of the apostles and the famous statue of the risen Christ, located at the altar, are made by sculptor Karl Albert Thorvaldsen. The sculpture of the Angel of Baptism in front of the choir is a personal gift from the church sculptor. In 1924, the Church of Our Lady received the status of the National Cathedral of Denmark. The Church of the Virgin is used by members of the royal family for various ceremonies and celebrations. On May 14, 2004, in the Church of Our Lady, the wedding of the Crown Prince of Denmark Frederick and Mary Elizabeth Donaldson took place, the romantic story of which they became very famous at the Sydney Olympics. Danish Radio broadcasts morning service from the Cathedral daily, except Sunday, from 08:05 a.m. to 08:23 a.m. local time.
