Berlenga Beach
Portugal, Peniche (municipality)

Berlenga Beach is located on Berlenga Grande, the largest island of the Berlengas archipelago, approximately ten kilometers off the coast of Portugal near the town of Peniche. This protected natural area, recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offers a rare travel experience in Western Europe — immersion in an environment largely untouched by modern development.

Accessible only by sea — via ferry or private boat — the beach itself is modest in size and bordered by steep rocky cliffs, creating a natural sense of seclusion. The sand is light and fine, while the water is exceptionally clear, with vibrant turquoise tones. Due to its marine biodiversity and visibility, the area is favored by divers and snorkeling enthusiasts.

Overlooking the cove stands the historic fortress of São João Baptista, a 17th-century structure connected to the island by a narrow stone bridge. This military monument adds a striking visual element to the landscape and reflects the region’s strategic maritime history. The island also features a network of eco-trails, suitable for hiking and birdwatching, with several rare and endemic species inhabiting the area.

Due to environmental regulations and limited capacity, visits are time-restricted. Tourist infrastructure is minimal, and overnight stays are only possible with advance booking in a small eco-lodge or campsite.

Berlenga is best suited for travelers seeking a clean, contemplative, and visually striking destination, far from the mainstream tourism circuit.
