Camelback Mountain is a prominent landmark and natural feature located in the city of Phoenix, Arizona. It is named for its distinctive shape, which resembles the head and hump of a kneeling camel when viewed from certain angles. The mountain is composed primarily of red sandstone and granite, with its summit reaching an elevation of approximately 2,704 feet (824 meters) above sea level.

The mountain is situated within the Phoenix Mountains Preserve and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, particularly hiking. Two primary trails provide access to the summit: the challenging Echo Canyon Trail on the western side and the slightly longer Cholla Trail on the northeastern side. Both trails are strenuous, involving significant elevation gain and sections of scrambling over rock, and are recommended for experienced hikers in good physical condition.

Camelback Mountain holds significant cultural and historical value. The area was historically utilized by the ancient Hohokam people. In more recent history, the mountain and its foothills have been a notable location for residential development and architectural landmarks, contributing to its iconic status within the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The ecosystem on Camelback Mountain is a representative example of the Sonoran Desert environment. It supports a variety of desert-adapted flora, including saguaro cacti, palo verde trees, and various species of cholla. Fauna includes desert cottontails, rock squirrels, numerous lizard species, and a variety of birdlife.

Due to its popularity and the challenging nature of the terrain, visitation is managed to preserve the natural environment and ensure public safety. Parking at trailheads is limited and often fills early in the day, especially during cooler months. Hikers are advised to carry ample water, wear appropriate footwear and sun protection, and be aware of seasonal hazards such as extreme heat.
